Baidyanath Navayas Loha:Navayasa Churna is an Ayurvedic medicine, in herbal powder form. Nava means nine ingredients. Ayas means Iron.This product contains 9 herbal ingredients with processed Iron Bhasma. It is mainly used in the Ayurvedic treatment of anemia, skin and liver conditions. Navayas lauh Ingredients, Benefits and Directions to Use;
Navayasa Lauha is a herbomineral Ayurvedic medicine. It is mentioned in Bhaishajya ratnavali in Pandu roga chikitsa. Pandu is a disease characterized by the pale color of the skin and can be correlated with Anemia in modern science. Navayasa Lauha is very useful and very commonly used in treatment of all forms of anemia.

Nabayas Lauha is prepared by combining Nava (nine herbal ingredients) with Aayasa/Loha (Iron) and hence named Nayayasa Churna or Lahua. It is prepared by mixing powder of iron (9 parts) and ginger, long pepper, black pepper, tuber of Cyperus rotundus, Plumbago root (each 1 part).

It is a Lauha kalpa. Lauha kalpas are preparations in which Lauha Bhasma is used as main ingredient added to other drugs. For preparing Lauha Kalp, the medicinal herbs are reduced to fine powder and mixed with Lauha Bhasma. Bhavana is given with prescribed liquids if mentioned. When well protected from moisture and heat, Lauha Kalp keep their potency for a period of two years.

Motha is widely used in Ayurveda for treatment of various diseases. This plant is also known as Purple nutsedge or nutgrass (English), Motha (Hindi) or Musta (Sanskrit). It is especially used as a cure for gastrointestinal and joint ailments. It has anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antidiarrhoeal, antipyretic, and analgesic activities. It is appetizer (deepan), digestive stimulant (pachan), anthelmintic (krimighna), diuretic (mutra virecaniya), scarifying/reducer of corpulence (lekhanya), purifyer of plasma (rasa pachaniya), antisaturative (triptighna), antipruriginous (kandughna), galactopurificator (stanyashodana), thirst restraining and(trishnagrahana).

Vidanga has carminative and hepatoprotective activity. It is anthelmintic, astringent, alterative and tonic.

Chitrak reduces vata and kapha and increases pitta. It is stimulant, anthelmintic and antiseptic. It is used in Ayurveda for colitis, indigestion, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, gas and intestinal parasites.

Lauha Bhasma increases hemoglobin level. It gives strength and cures anemia.

Method of preparation:
Take all ingredients of pharmacopoeial quality.

Wash, dry and powder ingredients 1 to 9 individually in a pulverizer and pass through sieve number 85. Weigh separately each powdered ingredient, mix together in specified ratio along with ayoraja (lauha) bhasma and pass through sieve number 44 to obtain a homogeneous blend. Store in an air-tight container. Store in a cool place in tightly closed containers, protected from light and moisture.

  • A study was done to evaluate hepatoprotective activity of Navayasa Churna against carbon tetra chloride intoxication in albino rats.
  • This study concluded that Navayasa churna possess hepatoprotective activity against CC14 induced hepatotoxicity in experimental rats, and can be employed for the management of various liver disorders.
  • Another study done to evalute hepatoprotective activity of Navayasa churna mixed in Lohasava, against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury in albino rats concluded the drug reduced liver weight, alkaline phosphatase and GOT activity in liver and chloresterol and GPT activity in serum. There was no effect on protein and liver glycogen.
  • In a study, Dhatri Lauha and Navayas Lauha were given to pregnant anemic women in dose of a 250 mg thrice a day in the form of vati, after food for 90 days with ghee or honey. The treatment showed significant result in anemia in pregnancy (Garbhini Pandu).
